The Apache Trail PDF Print E-mail
The Apache Trail, also known as State Route 88 is a popular Arizona auto tour road. The Apache Trail begins just east of Gold Canyon and winds its way through the volcanic rock fields of the Superstitions Mountains. The trail passes by Goldfield Ghost Town, the Lost Dutchman State Park, Canyon Lake, Tortilla Flat, Apache Lake, then on to Lake Roosevelt.

Completed in 1905 to accommodate the completion of the Theodore Roosevelt Dam, the course mimics the course of the Salt River. There are zig zags and hairpin turns all among amazing views and and canyon creeks along the way.The Native Americans continued to use the trail as a migratory route between their winter homes in the desert lowlands and their summer homes in the mountains along the Mogollon Rim and various sky islands of the central mountain and basin range regions of Arizona.
