The LPGA said this past week that its spring 2009 Phoenix LPGA International tournament will not be held this year at the Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club in Gold Canyon. Instead the 2009 tournament will be held at the Papago Golf Course in Phoenix. The LPGA has previously been held for the past five years at the Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club in Gold Canyon Arizona.

News reports indicated that the financial situation of the Superstition course being in a state of flux as one of the reasons for the move away from Superstition Mountain. According to news reports Superstition Mountain’s developer, Lyle Anderson Cos. of Scottsdale, lost control of the property to the Bank of Scotland late last year. Superstition Mountain was not in a position where they could commit to hosting the tournament.”

The move to Phoenix follows an extensive renovation of the 46-year-old Papago course. (Visit the website for Papago to learn more.)

The Phoenix tournament, scheduled for March 26-29, 2009, also has a new presenting sponsor – Mirassou, a California winery. Previously the event was sponsored by Safeway, but the grocery chain did not renew its sponsorship this year in a cost-cutting move.

The prize money of $1.5 million this year will match last year’s. It is hoped that last year’s total of more than 100,000 spectators will be matched or surpassed.
