If you live in Arizona you know that at times when you go to the "big box" stores in an effort to buy plants, but even the plants that are marked to do well in "sun", don’t because they come from locations where the "sun" is not as intense as Arizona.

Great plants that are oriented for Arizona weather are to be had when you buy  plants at Boyce Thompson Arboretum. October is a terrific month for gardening and landscaping.  And just in time for this is the Annual Fall Plant Sale at Boyce Thompson Arboretum that takes place October 9-25, 2009. This is the time to stock up on drought-tolerant plants appropriate for desert gardeners.

During the sale there are weekend events oriented to teach visitors about Sonoran desert horticulture with topics ranging from edible desert plants to herbs, trees, bonsai and butterfly gardening.

Don’t miss Tom McDonald from Gold Canyon’s Smiling Dog Landscape when he conducts landscaping walking tours on Oct. 16 at 3:00 p.m., Oct. 21 at 3:00 p.m. and Oct. 24 at 10:00 a.m. Gold Canyon landscape expert Tom McDonald, owner of Smiling Dog Landscapes, is a popular guest at the Arboretum’s annual plant sale fundraisers. He leads these three walking tours pointing out “Tom’s Top Ten” plants and trees for desert landscaping, explaining why plants you see in the Demonstration Garden are among his favorite desert-adapted, colorful, charismatic species for Pinal and Maricopa County landscaping. He will also answer explain basic irrigation and water-saving concepts questions.
