In an earlier post on Benjamin.com’s blog we posted information about a number of zip codes changing in the East Valley area beginning July 1, 2009. For a lot of people this change only meant they needed to notify their utility companies, or tell Aunt Susie or Uncle Tod, or maybe to get new business cards printed that reflected the new zip code.
But what has happened to some people in the affected zip codes is that they have lost their insurance coverage because companies are somehow under the impression the individual moved!
Here is a link to one news report of a Gold Canyon Arizona gentleman where his zip code changed from 85218 to 85118. He has undergone tremendous stress because his insurance company thinks he has moved and now he has no insurance coverage. It is taking weeks for this to be unraveled and the County Superintendent is apparently having to write a letter to the gentleman’s companies to verify that the gentleman did not move.
If you are in one of the communities in the Eastern Phoenix Arizona Valley area where there was a zip code change, you may want to be pro-active and check with your insurance companies and Medicare (if you are on Medicare) to be sure you are not in the same situation as the gentleman referenced on the linked article.
Who would have thought that the mere change of a zip code should have brought so much confusion for some folks?
