Superstition Area Land Trust commonly referred to as S.A.L.T. was formed in 1993 by the area citizens and settlements that bordered on the Superstition Wilderness area. The goal is to preserve the riparian area, native vegetation and wildlife of the vanishing Sonoran Desert.
Land trusts are private tax exempt, non profit organizations. They focus on developing non adversarial approachs with landowners, rancher and government agencies. Funding comes from donations of individuals, annual grants, endowments, bequests, corportions, grants and foundations.

While the headquarters of East Valley Wildlife is not located in Gold Canyon, it is a non-profit organization that has helped a number of Gold Canyon animals. It also seeks volunteers from Gold Canyon, as well as other parts of the East Phoenix Valley. In-home wildlife volunteers care for songbirds, quail, water-birds, waterfowl and small mammals such as bunnies and squirrels.
They do not have a central facility nor do they handle raptors (hawks, owls, etc) or larger mammals. They have been caring for orphaned and injured wildlife since 1989. Their main goals are to release as many of the ill, and wounded critters back into the wild as soon as they are well enough so they can lead productive natural lives. The organization, which is a 501(c) 3 organization, non-profit also, educates the public on the value of protecting our natural resources. For more information about this organization visit their website. |
